PAINT and playdough were swapped for birthday cake and face paint at the Stewart Street Children's House yesterday.
The celebration was organised to mark the child-care centre's 20th birthday.
The centre first opened its playground to youngsters in 1983 after Wollongong City Council, parents and the wider community successfully lobbied the Federal Government for funding.
Renovated in 1988, the centre's capacity increased from 25 to 40 children with a sandpit and soft-fall area added in 1995. A year later the playroom for three to five-year-olds was expanded.
Since the play equipment was first tested, about 2500 children - from babies to 12-year-olds - have attended the non-profit centre which operates under the banner of Illawarra Children's Services.
